Alors qu'apparaît l'ébénisterie parisienne, que les manufactures de soieries et de tapisseries renaissent sous l'impulsion de Colbert, comment les précieuses et les aristocrates meublent-ils ces grandes maisons de famille construites par Louis Le Vau ou François Mansart ? Quels objets d'art prennent place sous les plafonds peints par Le Brun place des Vosges ou sur l'île Saint-Louis ? De quel confort dispose le maréchal de Turenne lorsqu'il n'est pas en campagne ? A quoi sert la galerie d'Hercule de l'hôtel Lambert ? Où loge-t-on les domestiques, indispensables au fonctionnement de la maison ?
