A la fin du XVIe siècle et au début du XVIIe, Nevers est le premier centre faïencier français. Sa production marquera d'une empreinte originale et forte tout le développement de la faïencerie en France. Au XVIIe siècle, son Age d'or, la faïence de Nevers a créé une incroyable diversité de décors que l'on découvre aujourd'hui en parcourant les musées du monde entier. Jusqu'à ce jour on n'en connaissait que des aspects partiels, les publications se limitant aux modèles les plus répandus ou à quelques objets prestigieux souvent présentés hors contexte. Une étude complète supposait, outre l'examen d'innombrables pièces de collection, une approche exhaustive des données archéologiques, des documents d'archives et des analyses de laboratoire. Jean Rosen a effectué cette recherche soumise à une méthodologie rigoureuse pendant près de vingt-cinq années. Il est parvenu ainsi à une connaissance précise complètement renouvelée de la faïence de Nevers qui en révèle de nombreux aspects jusqu'alors insoupçonnés. Les quatre siècles de production de Nevers feront l'objet d'une publication complète. La partie la plus passionnante de cette étude est consacrée en premier lieu aux données générales historiques et techniques, en second lieu à l'Age d'or du XVII° siècle.
