Au Luxembourg, la génération adulte dans les années 1940 porte en elle la fracture de la guerre, de l'occupation-annexion et de ses lourdes conséquences. Arrivant au pouvoir après 1945, les hommes du « renouveau » sont animés d'une vision du monde transformée, ouverte sur l'international, fondée sur le droit et la justice, rejetant les extrêmes du passé. Dans cette étude, la mise en perspective biographique prend appui sur la reconstitution des parcours de responsables communautaires des années 1950 à 1970, à la Haute Autorité de la CECA, à la Commission de la CEE ou à la Cour de justice européenne. Il s'agit de Jean Fohrmann, Albert Wehrer, Michel Rasquin, Lambert Schaus, Victor Bodson, Albert Borschette, Charles-Léon Hammes et Pierre Pescatore. L'analyse est centrée sur la Seconde Guerre mondiale - cet « événement inaugural » - sur la perception que ces hommes en ont, sur le rôle qu'elle a joué dans leurs idées, leur carrière, leur implication dans le projet européen mais également dans leur évolution personnelle, spirituelle ou encore littéraire.
