Je pense qu'il a eu raison et je souhaite que ses chimigrammes vous apportent un plaisir jamais encore ressenti au-delà de la peinture et de la photographie.» Préface de Georges Brassens pour une exposition à la Bibliothèque nationale, Paris, 1979 Inventé le 10 novembre 1956 par Pierre Cordier, le chimigramme combine la physique de la peinture (vernis, cire, huile) et la chimie de la photographie (émulsion photosensible, révélateur, fixateur); sans appareil photographique, sans agrandisseur et en pleine lumière. D'après l'Encyclopaedia Universalis, «cette technique aboutit à des images jamais vues auparavant». Les oeuvres de Pierre Cordier interrogent la matière picturale, l'aléatoire, les labyrinthes, les circuits électroniques, les partitions musicales, les alphabets et surtout des textes de Jorge Luis Borges (La Bibliothèque de Babel, La Suma). Inaugurant les cinquante ans du chimigramme, cette monographie abondamment illustrée rassemble des textes de Michel Butor, Michel Poivert et Anaïs Feyeux, Pierre Sterckx, des notes de Pierre Cordier mises enforme par Anna Olszewska et Fabrice Biasino, une biographie par Christine De Naeyer et une introduction détaillée de cette technique.
