De 1892 à 1966, le défilé annuel des Quat'Z'Arts est une tradition attendue du paysage parisien. Un événement d'autant plus mythique que le public n'est pas admis à l'intérieur du bal qui s'ensuit. Une émanation artistico-érotique et humoristique des étudiants de l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts donnant naissance à des décors munificents, la construction des chars des différents ateliers, la confection de costumes et accessoires, le dessin d'affiches et de cartons d'invitation dont certains sont signés par des artistes célèbres ou en passe de le devenir : Mucha, Jules Chéret, Yves Brayer, ... Les Quat'Z'Arts reflètent la culture des professeurs et des élèves à travers des thèmes historiques revisités : la Bataille de Pharsale, Salammbô, les Délices de Capoue, L'Entrée triomphale de Ramsès II à Thèbes ... L'imaginaire collectif a retenu l'image de beautés dénudées portées sur les épaules, mais plus qu'une fête libertine de la jeunesse ou une saturnale moderne, les Quat'Z'Arts sont le fruit d'un idéal académique visant à réaliser l'union des arts sous la houlette de l'architecture.
