Elle est femme de pouvoir et de savoir, reine bâtisseuse et tacticienne capable de contrôler les rivages de la mer Méditerranée, assoiffée de philosophie, de science et de médecine, mais aussi une vaincue de l'histoire, captive des Romains et de leur propagande agressive. Prisonnière de son destin, elle est devenue l'incarnation de l'aplestos, une vision réadaptée par chaque siècle afin d'y projeter désirs et fantasmes. Ce livre explore ces différents visages de Cléopâtre et de l'Egypte à la Renaissance, de la littérature à l'art, des traités sur les poisons au théâtre qui a vu fleurir une constellation de Cléopâtres, parmi lesquelles la Cleopatre captive de Jodelle et la Cleopatra de Giraldi Cinthio. Il met aussi en lumière que la Reine d'Egypte a incarné pour les hommes de la Renaissance une constellation de vertus , elle est l'archétype de la femme fatale, une femme farte qui brise ses chaires par une mort héroïque, une femme de savoir et d'expérimentations. On cannait mieux aujourd'hui le rôle de Cléopâtre dans la renaissance culturelle et son intérêt pour les sciences grâce aux sources arabes, aux récentes découvertes archéologiques, aux monnaies et aux monuments égyptiens et romains qui la concernent.
