Dans ce livre très richement illustré, l'histoire des sièges se raconte en images pour pouvoir reconnaître avec précision les éléments caractéristiques d'une période. Bergères, cabriolets, fauteuils en confessionnal, sièges en gondole ou dossiers à la reine, l'auteur nous guide, de fauteuil en fauteuil, à travers les styles. Pour accompagner les nombreuses photographies, des dessins dévoilent les techniques de garnissage et de tapisserie en montrant la constitution de l'intérieur des sièges. Qu'il s'agisse du sanglage, de la couture du bourrelet, du guindage, de l'étoffe de couverture ou de la passementerie, les habitudes et les savoir-faire des tapissiers ont évolué au fil des siècles. Connaître ces changements permettra à l'amateur d'éviter les anachronismes et à l'artisan scrupuleux de réparer un siège ancien avec les techniques de l'époque.
