Le "grand arbre" de la poésie chinoise, devenu florissant, prend racine sous les rois Zhou (XVe-IIe sièlce av. J. -C.), grandit aux débuts de l'empire, avec la dynastie des Han (IIIe av. _IIIe apr. J. -C.), pour produire bourgeons et feuilles au temps dit des Six Dynasties (IVe-VIe siècle) et s'épanouir sous les Tang et les Song (VIIe-XIIIe siècle). Elégies, chants, poèmes champêtres ou médidatifs offrent l'écho de la sagesse et l'art de vivre chinois : impermanence de l'existence et l'immuabilité de la nature se lisent au fil des saisons à travers de subtiles variations d'atmosphère, de l'ermitage en montagne aux jardins verdoyants, en passant par de modestes chaumières. Ils traduisent les aspirations profondes à la pureté du coeur, à l'intégrité de l'esprit et au détachement parfait. Par un raffinement verbal extrême et une grande virtuosité des formes, les poètes dessinent les contours mouvants et émouvants de l'âme humaine. Par leurs thèmes, les sentiments qu'ils convoquent, ces textes dialoguent merveilleusement avec l'univers des peintres des dynasties Song, Yuan, Ming et Qing, du Xe siècle au XIXe siècle.
