Beau, laid ou insaisissable, le corps n'échappe pas au passage du temps et aux inflexions ou déploiements des émotions. En plus de sa singularité propre, il appartient à un environnement social, politique et historique qui le construit, le façonne, l'élève ou le détruit. "Il n'y a que des corps ... il n'y a pas de corps", écrivait Voltaire. Dans nos sociétés individualistes, le corps est scruté de la médecine au sport, de la mode à la chirurgie esthétique, du body-building au body-art. Il définit l'identité de chacun, tout en constituant un enjeu social et politique majeur. Mais, cet "avènement du corps" se double paradoxalement d'un "adieu au corps", car "l'avènement du corps le fait disparaître". Plus nous idpolatrons le corps, moins nous supportons ses limites, qui nous rappelent trop l'humilité de notre condition. La précarité de la chair laisse place à une volonté de purifier, de rectifier le corps jusqu'à l'abolir en lui substituant une machine, aussi prévisible qu'impersonnelle. Cette riche anthologie illustrée, au-delà de sa saveur littéraire invite à nous interroger sur notre condition humaine.
