Grand peintre du Siècle de Louis XV, Jean Siméon Chardin a su se démarquer de ses contemporains et marquer l'histoire de l'art de son empreinte si particulière. Artiste incontesté des scènes de genre et des natures mortes, il a su dépeindre la vie dans ce qu'elle a de plus éphémère et de plus précieux. Peintre des moeurs bourgeoises du XVIIIe siècle, il nous plonge dans l'intimité des élites parisiennes, dépeignant souvent des figures de femmes ou d'enfants. Sa touche lumineuse et réaliste révèle la froideur cadavérique d'un gibier ou encore l'aspect fascinant d'une raie et de ses entrailles, ce "monstre étrange" ainsi que l'appelait Marcel Proust. Aspect moins connu de son oeuvre, ses autoportraits et portraits au pastel ont également joué un rôle important dans sa carrière lui permettant d'affiner sa technique et de maîtriser pleinement le dialogue des couleurs.
