Replacé dans le contexte socio-culturel foisonnant de la fin de siècle, sa carrière se déploye sur une douzaine d'années, le conduisant à varier les techniques, à enrichir les matières, riches et brillantes, à jouer subtilement des couleurs vives, claires, rehaussées de noir, avec un goût indéfectible pour le portrait, non sans puiser aux sources de l'art japonais. Lautrec est l'un des rares artistes internationalement reconnus dont la faveur exceptionnelle tient pour partie à ses sujets équivoques, dont la prostitution.
