L'attente, le doute, la concentration étaient choses visibles." Ces phrases de Paul Valéry étaient bien connues d'Edward Hopper (1882-1967) qui les recopia en 1940. Elles pourraient servir d'exergue à son oeuvre tant l'artiste n'a cessé de représenter la posture singulière de l'attente. Les personnages et les lieux que sa peinture met en scène, couple, lectrice, employé de bureau, serveuse ou hôtesse, chambre d'hôtel, café, restaurant, route ou voie ferrée, nous montrent des individus immobiles dans une expectative indéfinie... Le repli solitaire et énigmatique de ses figures, qui trouve un écho dans ses vues d'architectures ou dans les espaces vides confinant à l'abstraction de sa dernière période, marque un décalage assumé avec les impératifs d'activité et de production de la société contemporaine. "C'était l'architecture qui m'intéressait, mais les rédacteurs voulaient des gens agitant les bras", déclarait Hopper au sujet des journaux qui l'employèrent longtemps comme dessinateur de presse, au début de sa carrière. L'un des secrets de son oeuvre tient au glissement de l'animation moderne dans le temps des pierres. La modernité n'est pas niée, elle est immobilisée. La course au futur est mise en suspens.
