LE LIVRE Depuis ses débuts de caricaturiste au Havre jusqu'à ses réalisations ultime sà Giverny, cette monographie aborde l'ensemble de la carrière d'un des pères de l'art moderne. La première partie de sa carrière a été sous-estimée : l'auteure revient sur son travail de caricaturiste et son initiation à la peinture par Boudin et Jongkind. De même, une nouvelle réflexion sur la peinture de plein-air s'imposait : peintre paysagiste avznt tout - de la Normandie à la côté méditerranéene en passant par les bords de Seine, Argenteuil mais aussi Belle-Ile et la Creuse - il élabore au fil des années une méthode de travail sans précédent. Le phénomène des séries - Gare Saint-Lazare, Meules, Cathédrale de Rouen, Giverny ... - est amplement analysé. Les sources d'inspiration de l'artiste sont également mises en regard de son oeuvre, des gravures romantiques aux estampes japonaises en passant par le cinéma. Une attention particulière est accordée à ses oeuvres graphiques peu reproduites : pastels, dessins. Etayé par un croisement de sources - correspondance, textes critiques de Geffroy à Clémenceau sans oublier Mirbeau, Zola, Proust ... - et par les analyses approfondies des oeuvres, ce livre permet ainsi de comprendre véritablement la démarche du peintre et son cheminement vers une poétique de la nature.
