La Beat Generation naît à New York dans les années 1940 de la rencontre d'un petit groupe d'écrivains encore inconnus : Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs et Allen Ginsberg. En deux décennies, rayonnant au-delà de ce premier cercle, le mouvement acquiert une notoriété immense. De Greenwich Village à North Beach, le quartier de la bohème littéraire de San Francisco, puis au-delà des frontières vers le Mexique, Tanger, Paris et jusqu'en Extrême-Orient, porté par l'ivresse du voyage et le goût de la liberté, l'esprit de la Beat Generation se répand partout. Défiant l'Amérique consumériste, ségrégationniste et réactionnaire, défendant sans doctrine un idéal contemplatif et nomade, le groupe multiplie les expérimentations, formant le creuset des contre-cultures modernes. Avec plus de cinq cents oeuvres et documents, l'exposition "Beat Generation" au Centre Pompidou met en perspective un courant qui va bien au-delà de l'avant-garde littéraire. Les essais, témoignages, poèmes et entretiens rassemblés dans cet ouvrage richement illustré rendent compte de l'effervescence d'un des mouvements culturels les plus influents du XXe siècle.
