Avec ses règles, l'Europe a modifié le paysage sportif : liberté de circulation des joueurs, transferts, cotation des clubs en bourse, paris, libre concurrence, aides publiques aux clubs, droits TV, dopage... Cet ouvrage présente ces règles, décisions et pratiques, pour montrer que l'européanisation du sport est devenue une réalité que nul ne peut plus ignorer. Dès 1957, la construction européenne s'est heurtée, dans le domaine des sports, à de fortes résistances, notamment dans le principe de la libre circulation des sportifs dont le football constitue, probablement, le cas le plus intéressant. Le principe de la séparation des sphères politiques et sportives, cher à l'Union des associations européennes de football (UEFA), ainsi que la défense de l'esprit du sport furent souvent invoqués pour s'opposer au droit communautaire. L'arrêt Bosman, en 1995, a mis définitivement fin à cette situation et a été amplifié par l'arrêt Malaja, en 2002, qui a agrandi les frontières de l'Europe et accéléré la mondialisation du sport européen, principalement les équipes de clubs. L'Europe mène actuellement une politique du sport. Du côté de l'Union européenne, le Livre Blanc sur le sport de la Commission européenne et l'insertion d'un article sur le sport dans le Traité de Lisbonne sont une étape. Le Conseil de l'Europe, depuis longtemps déjà, a mis ses valeurs humanistes au service du sport.
