S'insérant dans une vaste collection destinée à couvrir l'ensemble du panorama du droit familial en Belgique, le présent ouvrage est consacré à la famille. Après avoir analysé la notion de famille et les différents rôles sociaux joués par cette institution, l'auteur montre les mouvements de structuration et de déstructuration qui la traversent au sein du droit belge. Ensuite, les deux modes de création de liens parentaux que sont la filiation et l'adoption sont décrits dans leur complexité, fruit d'une intervention législative incessante et de l'abondante jurisprudence de la Cour constitutionnelle. Le nom, en tant qu'effet du lien familial et élément essentiel de la personnalité, fait l'objet d'un chapitre particulier. L'auteur aborde ensuite l'éducation des enfants, rôle premier de la famille, selon les deux vecteurs que sont l'autorité parentale et l'hébergement d'une part, et la contribution alimentaire d'autre part. L'obligation alimentaire, instrument de la solidarité économique au sein de la famille, fait l'objet d'une présentation générale. Un chapitre est alors consacré à la structure de la dévolution successorale, par laquelle cette solidarité patrimoniale se manifeste au-delà du décès. Enfin, l'auteur montre comment le droit belge protège les personnes majeures vulnérables et les malades mentaux.
