Cet ouvrage a pour but de retracer le développement des conceptions et connaissances concernant le langage naturel, depuis leur origine jusqu'aux années 1930. Selon un plan concerté - dans un langage clair et accessible, aussi bien au philosophe, à l'historien et au linguiste qu'à un public cultivé - des spécialistes exposent, de première main, le contenu et l'évolution des savoirs linguistiques dans la plupart des grandes traditions culturelles. La naissance des métalangages est consacré à l'apparition de la réflexion sur le langage, depuis le savoir inconscient qui préside à tout échange langagier jusqu'aux mythes, qu'il s'agisse de ceux que l'on trouve chez les Indiens d'Amérique ou chez les Hébreux. Sylvain Auroux, qui a organisé L’Histoire des Idées Linguistiques, est Directeur de recherches au CNRS. Il est responsable de l’Équipe d’Histoire des Théories Linguistiques à l’Université Paris VII.
