C'est également la toute première fenêtre ouverte sur un écosystème vieux de 125 millions d'années : outre les Iguanodons, des milliers d'autres fossiles ont en effet été mis au jour. C'est enfin une formidable aventure humaine : des trésors d'inventivité sont déployés pour extraire ces énormes squelettes, les ramener à la surface, assurer leur conservation à long terme et les reconstituer en position présumée de vie. A partir des documents de fouilles originaux, ce livre replace la découverte des Iguanodons de Bernissart dans son contexte historique et géologique. Il montre comment leur description a contribué à la naissance d'une nouvelle discipline, la paléobiologie.
