Cet ouvrage collectif constitue une première synthèse critique et analyse comparative des instruments supraétatiques (régionaux et internationaux) qui portent sur les droits sociaux entendus au sens large du terme (droits liés au travail et à la protection sociale). L'importance, parmi les textes régionaux, de la Charte sociale européenne du Conseil de l'Europe - le texte le plus complet en la matière à l'échelle mondiale - est mise en relief sans négliger l'analyse des autres textes régionaux (américains et africains). Sur le plan international de l'oeuvre de l'O.I.T. et les Pactes de l'ONU sont dûment appréciés, ainsi que la façon dont ils sont pris en compte (ou pas!) dans quelques pays à titre indicatif (France, Grèce, Japon). Le "talon d'Achille" des droits sociaux étant leur efficacité réduite, une attention particulière est portée sur les méthodes de contrôle d'application des normes de chaque instrument en lui-même et en confrontation avec les autres instruments pour mieux faire ressortir les faiblesses et les virtualités d'une amélioration.
