Le congrès international d’Izmir (Turquie), le premier de cette ampleur sur les terres cuites figurées grecques et romaines, a donné lieu à deux volumes. Celui-ci réunit 58 contributions (en français, anglais, italien et allemand) : les unes traitent de questions d’iconographie, les autres font connaître quantité d’objets replacés dans leurs contextes, maisons, tombes et sanctuaires de Méditerranée orientale. L’ensemble témoigne du profond renouvellement d’un domaine de recherche longtemps resté à l’ombre de l’histoire de l’art. Toutes les approches sont mises en oeuvre – archéologie, archéométrie, iconographie, religion, anthropologie culturelle – pour une contribution essentielle à l’archéologie de la religion antique (pratiques votives et funéraires). Ce livre est à la fois un état des lieux dans un domaine de recherche au dynamisme nouveau, un manuel enrichi d’une substantielle bibliographie, un outil pour la recherche et une mine de documents inédits pour l’anthropologie sociale et culturelle.
