Du baroque aux Lumières, les pays croates connaissent de profondes mutations. Si perdure la division entre un royaume Habsbourg de Croatie lié à celui de Hongrie, l'Istrie et la Dalmatie vénitiennes et les territoires sous domination ottomane, un grand changement survient qui concerne l'histoire de l'Europe tout entière : le recul de l'Empire ottoman après 1683. Terres et populations libérées passent sous l'autorité soit du monarque autrichien soit de la République de Venise, le sultan conservant la Bosnie et l'Herzégovine. Surtout dans les régions intégrées à la monarchie autrichienne commence un temps de reconstruction dans tous les domaines. Malgré leur position marginale, les pays croates ne restent pas à l'écart du renouvellement des arts et de la pensée. Les liens avec l'Italie comme avec l'Europe centrale sont très forts, comme en témoignent aujourd'hui encore églises, bibliothèques et palais. En même temps, notamment à Raguse (Dubrovnik), se développe une littérature croate. L'Académie des sciences et des arts de Croatie a souhaité présenter au lecteur francophone ce passé encore si perceptible aujourd'hui.. Elle a pour cela réuni une équipe de spécialistes qui traitent les aspects extrêmement variés et complémentaires d'une période complexe de l'histoire de leur pays.
