Description

English summary: Tomb MMA 504 is at the heart of 11th Dynasty necropolis that is on the northern flank of the wadi leading to Deir el-Bahari. The site chosen by the quarrymen of the Middle Kingdom was totally unsuitable, to the extent that tunneling had to be rapidly abandoned, leaving an unfinished tomb that looked more like a rocky cavern than a funerary monument. Neverthess, some five hundred years later the site received visits from many members of the construction team and the clergy of the funerary temples established in Deir el-Bahari at the beginning of the 18th Dynasty. Consequently the site houses nearly eighty textual and figurative graffiti. These inscriptions reveal a combination of literate, social and cultural practices, specifically relating to scribes and middle-level administrators of the New Kingdom.
