Le blessé de guerre n'est pas unique. Il peut s'agir d'un combattant, d'une victime civile, d'un homme, d'une femme, d'un enfant ou d'un vieillard. Les types de lésions sont nombreux et variés, de la plaie balistique simple, au polycriblage, en passant par la brûlure. Les conditions de prise en charge sont également multiples selon le type de conflit et les moyens mis à disposition des services de santé : les délais d'évacuation sont parfois très longs, certains médicaments et matériels peuvent faire défaut, le grand nombre de victimes peut saturer les structures de soins. Sans parler des circonstances particulières d'exercice, toutes ces particularités liées au type de blessure et au blessé lui-même aboutissent au fait que les principes de la traumatologie civile ne peuvent pas être appliqués directement au blessé de guerre.
