Description
Les années 1930 marquent un tournant dans l'oeuvre d'Henri Matisse. En dépit du succès, il se lasse des intérieurs niçois et des nus alanguis. Avec l'âge et la renommée viennent les remises en question : c'est de neuf dont il a besoin, dans ses thèmes comme dans ses techniques picturales. Changeant d'échelle, il s'attaque à La Danse, vaste composition murale destinée à la fondation Barnes à Merion, et prend ainsi un nouveau départ, au seuil de sa soixantième année. L'activité artistique de Matisse est alors étroitement suivie par la grande revue d'avant-garde Cahiers d'art, lancée par Christian Zervos en 1926. Dans un moment d'intense recherche, l'oeuvre du peintre se fait radicale et se retrouve au coeur des débats d'idées et des courants artistiques que relaient les Cahiers. C'est par ce prisme que le présent ouvrage entend explorer la production du Matisse des années 1930, pour redonner toute sa portée à cette riche période de création, durant laquelle l'artiste s'impose comme une des figures majeures du modernisme international.
