Notre-Dame et la Sainte-Chapelle incarnent la place éminente de Paris dans l'Europe artistique à partir du mile siècle. Dans le domaine militaire, la forteresse du Louvre de Philippe Auguste est emblématique de la fortification cap& tienne au XIIIe siècle. Au siècle suivant, l'enceinte de Charles V a métamorphosé la rive droite. Les hôtels de Cluny et de Sens comptent parmi les résidences aristocratiques les plus raffinées du XVe siècle où Paris reste une ville de cour. Ce tableau du Paris gothique intègre aussi les vestiges d'architecture bourgeoise dont les caves constituent le plus important témoignage. Paris, qualifiée au XIVe siècle de "ville des villes", offrait alors l'image d'une effervescence généralisée. Plus d'une trentaine de notices monographiques sont ici consacrées aux principaux monuments de l'architecture religieuse, civile et militaire.
