De tout ce qui touche à la civilisation des Pharaons, l'art de construire pour l'éternité fascine plus que tout. Et il ne se limite pas à l'érection des pyramides de l'Ancien Empire. Deux mille ans plus tard, les principes qui l'ont régi sont identiques, même si les formes architecturales se sont adaptées aux temps et aux lieux. Plus tard encore, sous l'influence des techniques importées par les Grecs puis les Romains, le bâtisseur de la Vallée du Nil ne renonce pas à des procédés consacrés par l'usage, que son cadre de vie, ses buts, son savoir-faire ont imposé et dont l'efficacité s'est avérée " un million de fois ", selon la phraséologie égyptienne elle-même. La construction pharaonique a pour ambition de dresser un bilan de ce que l'on peut savoir, au début du XXIe siècle, des principes et des techniques qui permirent aux habitants du Double-Pays d'édifier, pour leur roi et leur dieu, les édifices cultuels. Réunissant leurs spécialités propres, architecte, géologue et égyptologues ont donné à ce livre une forme neuve en associant, au sein d'un même ouvrage, les données de leurs disciplines. Retracer le cadre géographique, socio-économique et culturel dans lequel s'est épanouie la civilisation pharaonique permet de saisir les raisons qui fondent les règles directrices de la construction et motivent leur quasi-immuabilité : elles sont intrinsèques au paysage d'Égypte. De ses falaises furent extraits les matériaux (granite, grès, calcaire, etc.) plus ou moins proches du Nil, cordon de vie et source de tout déplacement ; la crue annuelle rehaussa les points de chargement et de déchargement ; le limon mouillé permit de lubrifier les sols pour glisser les charges sans jamais les soulever ; rocheux ou constitué d'alluvions, son sol s'offrit à tous les types de fondations ; mêlée de sable et de paille hachée, la terre crue donna corps aux millions de briques indispensables à la vie des chantiers. Sans elles, pas de rampes, pas d'échafaudages lourds, installations provisoires indispensables à la mise en place des gigantesques pylônes ou salles hypostyles comme celles de Karnak ou d'Edfou, pourtant séparées dans le temps par plus d'un millénaire. Les mines de cuivre et les gisements de surface fournirent les matières premières des outils métalliques et lithiques ainsi que les produits indispensables à diverses étapes des chantiers : sable abrasif, gypse pour la fabrication du plâtre, ocres des couleurs, etc. L'homme du passé a souvent consigné par écrit ses incessants efforts pour contribuer à maintenir, aux côtés de son souverain, Maât, l'ordre universel. De tous ces textes, seuls quelques uns, les plus évocateurs, ont été présentés. Ils valorisent la mémoire de ces milliers d'ouvriers anonymes, de leurs efforts, leurs astuces, leur bon sens ou leur fatigue.
