Ce livre nous propose une lecture de Spinoza qui découvre dans L'Ethique et dans les ouvrages politiques une théorie générale de l'individualité et des relations inter-humaines : théorie de l'aliénation et des conflits qui en découlent ; genèse de la société civile à partir d'un état de nature qui n'est pas sans ressembler à une société féodale anarchique ; théorie de l'histoire qui s'apparente à un traité des passions du corps social ; théorie de l'équilibre politique et de sa forme la plus achevée, l'Etat libéral bourgeois, dont l'avènement permettrait à la Raison de se développer sans entraves ; possibilité, au terme de cet essor, d'instaurer entre individus désaliénés un a communisme des esprits a. L'anthropologie spinoziste, on le voit, est riche d'implications et de perspectives. Pour l'étudier, l'auteur utilise une méthode d'analyse consistant à mettre systématiquement en évidence l'architecture interne du système : homologies de structures entre L'Ethique et le Traité politique, entre les trois derniers livres de L'Ethique, entre les parties de chacun de ces livres, etc. Alors se manifeste une structure dominante qui, à travers des variations plus ou moins libres, fait partout sentir sa présence : celle de l'arbre séfirotique des kabbalistes.
