Le but de ce manuel est de montrer la richesse, la variete et le caractere operatoire des reflexions medievales sur l'espace geographique. Une premiere partie developpe une histoire des representations en lien avec les transformations des conditions culturelles generales, depuis le haut Moyen Age qui recueille l'heritage de la science antique jusqu'a l'humanisme geographique et aux premieres manifestations de l'expansion europeenne. Suit une anthologie de documents souvent inedits ou peu connus, commentes et classes selon un parcours allant de la place de la Terre dans le cosmos a la technique de la mesure des parcelles, en passant par les reflexions des savants medievaux sur l'espace habite et la fonction des cartes, la cartographie des espaces maritimes, le voyage comme moyen de connaissance, la cartographie locale et regionale. Les analyses s'efforcent de ne plaquer sur les documents aucun a priori epistemologique ou interpretatif. Les liens entre ces differents champs ainsi qu'entre theorie et pratique sont constamment soulignes, permettant une approche globale des reflexions medievales sur l'espace terrestre.
