L'équipe pluridisciplinaire et internationale, ouvre une réflexion d'ampleur sur le pouvoir créatif du continent africain, hier et aujourd'hui. La première partie permet de redonner à l'Afrique la place qu'elle mérite dans l'histoire mondiale. La deuxième section du livre est consacrée aux formes d'arts africains dits historiques, traditionnels ou classiques, c'est-à-dire aux objets généralement collectés et exposés dans les collections publiques et privées occidentales. Enfin, la troisième et dernière partie met en valeur la contemporanéité des fomes africaines. Outre ces trois grandes sections, l'ouvrage propose des focus, études concises sur des productions régionales marquantes (l'Ethiopie chrétienne, les arts royaux danhoméen et ashanti, etc.) ou sur des matérialités spécifiques (la terre cuite, la photographie, les perles, etc.). Une abondante iconographie (plus de 560 illustrations) - mêlant typologies d'objets (archéologie, formes classiques et inventions contemporaines) ainsi que différents médiums (sculptures, céramiques, textiles ...) - permet de donner un panorama aussi complet que possible. Cette somme met ainsi en avant non seulement des chefs-d'oeuvre, mais aussi des objets plus confidentiels, issus de divers musées (africains, européens ou encore américains) et des collections privées du monde entier. Conjuguant recherches scientifiques, approche historique et une vision moderne, ce livre sans précédent est amené à devenir une référence incontournable dans le domaine.
