LE LIVRE L'enjeu passionnant de cet ouvrage est de revenir au triple du mot dess(e)in : celui de projet, de recherche, d'étude, de pensée (sens intellectuel), tout comme celui de ligne, de délinéation, de surface (sens formel) à l'aide du crayon, de la plume, du pinceau (sens matériel). Ecartant une approche classique par siècles et par écoles (l'école italienne et ses subdivisions régionales, l'école française, l'école nordique etc.), l'auteur mène une investigation approfondie à partir des pratiques d'atelier et des procédés de recherche graphique employés par les dessinateurs pour étudier les formes à venir de leur composition. De la première pensée à l'esquisse aboutie, c'est toute la genèse des oeuvres qui se dévoile sous nos yeux. Privilégiant une présentation thématique, de la fin du Moyen Age au XXe siècle, les "dessins de maître" convoqués redonnent au médium sa dimension exploratoire et préparatoire à une oeuvre d'art, qualité jusqu'ici peu étudiée. Plus de 300 feuilles, certaines regroupées en séquences démonstratives à l'aide de dépliants - dont La Madone au long cou du Parmigianino et Les Demoiselles d'Avignon de Picasso - étayent cette captivante immersion dans le laboratoire de la création artistique.
