LE LIVRE L'artiste néerlandais Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) aura patiemment et méthodiquement, élaboré une oeuvre picturale et théorique considérable qui, par son exigence et sa quête de l'absolu, continue d'exercer sa fascination sur l'art d'aujourd'hui. Naître à la fin du XIXe siècle dans une petite ville provinciale du Nord-Est des Pays-Bas, au sein d'une famille calviniste, laissait peu de place à la liberté intérieure et à la découverte d'un monde différent. Mais Piet Mondrian a connu sa vocation très jeune. En Zélande, en 1908, ses premiers thèmes sont déjà fixés : l'église, le phare, les dunes, la mer. Horizontales et verticales, indéfiniment répétées, les lignes dessinent une nouvelle vision du monde. Une première installation à Paris, entre 1912 et 1914, conforte ses convictions. Le cubisme de Bracque et de Picasso, détaché de tout illusionnisme, concentré sur une géométrisation des formes simples, le convainc de franchir le pas de l'abstraction. Dès 1913, la grille de lignes horizontales et verticales croisées se substitue à toute référence figurative pour exprimer "la vérite en peinture" et "la beauté générale". Les titres des oeuvres sont abolis, au profit d'une stricte numérotation qui systématise sa pratique sérielle. Théorisée à travers de nombreux textes et par le biais d'une revue, De Stijl (Le Style), sa nouvelle plastique, fondée sur le rapport primordial de l'angle droit est un véritable dogme dont Mondrian ne s'écartera plus. Mais son ambition ne s'est jamais arrêtée aux dimensions étroites du tableau. Artiste visionnaire, utopique, il a rêvé d'un monde nettoyé de toute esthétique traditionnelle et transformé par le néoplasticisme.
