Loin de se limiter a la description du réel, les artistes réalistes ont eu a coeur de l'interpréter, afin d'offrir au public de nouvelles clés de lecture du monde. Si ce mouvement, né dans les années 1830- 1840, avant de prendre son essor sous la Révolution de 1848, paraît aujourd'hui bien sage, Courbet et d'autres peintres - Honoré Daumier, Jean-François Millet, Rosa Bonheur... - le pensèrent comme une opération de transgression ostensible et scandaleuse. C'est au début du XIXe siècle qu'apparaissent, marquéees notamment par la découverte de l'art espagnol, les premières peintures réalistes dépeignant les habitants des provinces françaises (Bretagne, Vendée, Pyrénées, etc.) dont certains peintres s'attachent a représenter tant les costumes que les coutumes. Admiré ou critiqué pour sa capacité à montrer sans détour et parfois avec brutalité le monde qui nous entoure, cet art éminemment social et politique s'intéresse en effet aux sujets "ordinaires" (paysans, blanchisseuses, etc.). Face à une société en pleine industrialisation et confrontée à un exode rural important, la vie domestique, le monde paysan, les pratiques religieuses et communautaires proposaient ainsi des sujets rassurants empreints d'harmonie et de calme. A contrario, à la fin du siècle, la peinture réaliste mettra en lumière la modernisation industrielle de l'Europe et les conflits sociaux et politiques liés aux droits des travailleurs. Loin de se cantonner à la France, Bertrand Tillier s'attelle également à démontrer le rayonnement de ce mouvement à l'échelle internationale dans les années 1860-1870, que ce soit en Angleterre, en Allemagne (Hans Thoma, Adolph von Menzel, Wilhelm Leibl, etc.) ou encore en URSS (Ilya Répine) et aux Etats-Unis (Thomas Eakins ou Winslow Homer). Rédigé par l'un des spécialistes les plus éminents de l'art du XIXe siècle et comprenant pas moins de 320 illustrations, l'ouvrage propose une analyse captivante sur cette esthétique subversive qu'est le réalisme.
