En avril 1925 est inaugurée, à Paris, l'Exposition des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes, qui marque l'apogée de l'Art déco. Ce courant esthétique et artistique né avant la Première Guerre mondiale a pris son essor dès les années 1910 et se déploie au cours des années 1920, alors qu'émerge un nouveau mode de vie où vitesse, mouve- ment et liberté prévalent. Protéiforme et insaisissable, l'Art déco regroupe un ensemble de formes, de motifs, de matériaux et de techniques modernes utilisés par des créateurs comme Pierre Chareau, Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, André Groult, Eileen Gray, Jean-Michel Frank, Maurice Marino+, Lalique, Cartier... Après une évocation de l'Exposition internationale de 1925 illustrée de saisissantes autochromes, l'ouvrage présente, à travers plusieurs contributions thématiques et trois portfolios d'images, les multiples facettes de l'Art déco jusqu'à sa réincarnation actuelle dans le nouvel Orient Express. Il offre à voir nombre de chefs-d'oeuvre, dont ceux issus des collections du musée des Arts décoratifs, institution qui a joué un rôle majeur dans le développement de l'Art déco.
