Le Mirage IV, mis en oeuvre par les Forces Aériennes Stratégiques à partir de 1964. fut le premier vecteur de la force de frappes nucléaire française. En qualité de maître d'ouvrage, l'Etat confia la définition le développement de cet avion biplace, biréacteur, à la Générale Aéronautique Marcel Dassault, qui en assura la maîtrise d'oeuvre et la réalisation en liaison avec d'autres entreprises aéronautiques françaises de premier plan, en parallèle à la mise au point de la bombe atomique du Mirage IV par la Direction des Applications Militaires du Commissariat à l'Engrgie Atomique. Hervé Beaumont avait publié en 2003 : "Mirage IV, le bombardier stratégiques qui connut un grand succès et qui fut rapidement épuisé. Pendant les 20 ans qui séparèrent la publication de ce nouveau livre sur le Mirage IV, l'auteur a rassemblé, sur les deux versions de l'avion, une multitude de nouveaux éléments avec des documenta techniques sur le développement, sur les équipements, sur la motorisation et sur les emports, des témoignages recueillis par l'auteur auprès d'acteurs essentiels, des photographies et des illustrations inédites, des documents techniques d'utilisation opérationnelle (équipages et mécaniciens) et des documentations de mise en oeuvre, Hervé Beaumont réactualise aussi l'histoire de l'achat et de l'emploi des indispensables avions ravitailleurs Boeing Stratotanker C-135 F et C-135 FR. En se fondant sur le situations géopolitiques et militaires des époques concernées, des demandes de l'Etat, des basins de l'armée de l'Air, de l'évolution des doctrines de stratégie nucléaire, particulièrement de la dissuasion aéroportée, ce livre de référence retrace l'histoire des prototypes, des avions de présérie et des avions de série des versions Mirage IV A et Mirage IV P, en le jalonnant de données techniques, de témoignages exclusifs, d'informations Sur l'utilisation opérationnelle, l'ensemble étant très abondamment illustré par plus de 2 200 photos et Illustrations.
