La ligne ferroviaire des Causses et de l'Aubrac joint Béziers à Neussargues en 277 km avec des prolongements vers Clermont-Ferrand et Paris. Elle est symbolique autant par la diversité des paysages traversés que par celle des communautés humaines desservies depuis la plaine côtière héraultaise sous influence méditerranéenne en passant par l'Aveyron jusqu'aux hauts plateaux de l'Aubrac et de la Margeride à plus de 1000 m d'altitude dans la Lozère et le Cantal. Achevée en 1888 par la Compagnie du Midi, son tracé difficile comporte de nombreux ouvrages d'art dont des viaducs emblématiques comme ceux de la Crueize et de Garabit. Le Midi, dans un élan visionnaire, l'électrifia dès 1931/32 ; l'énergie provenait de centrales hydro-électriques, ce qui en fait une voie de transport préadaptée aux enjeux contemporains de protection de l'environnement. Mais son sort a été maintes fois remis en cause ; c'est une des rares survivantes de la désertification ferroviaire qui affecte le Massif Central depuis plusieurs décennies, et elle doit son maintien à l'action d'individus, de collectivités, d'associations convaincus de son utilité et de son avenir. Dans cet ouvrage écrit par sept auteurs passionnés et bons connaisseurs du chemin de fer, illustré de nombreuses photographies et cartes, les différents chapitres portent sur l'histoire et la description de la ligne, celles des lignes afférentes dont beaucoup ont disparu, le matériel roulant, l'évolution des dessertes dans le temps et l'intérêt socio-économique et touristique. Les derniers chapitres traitent de la situation contemporaine : tout en décrivant la décrépitude des dessertes des territoires ruraux en France et dans le Massif Central, ils soulignent les perspectives d'avenir et de modernisation de la ligne qui contribueront à l'aménagement du Massif Central ; des propositions d'amélioration de l'infrastructure et des dessertes concluent l'ouvrage en traitant notamment de l'exemple de lignes comparables qui ont été réhabilitées à l'étranger.
