Contrastant avec l'image répandue d'un artiste libertin et provocateur, "ennemi de Dieu et de tout ce qui est honnête" selon la formule de l'évêque des Marquises, voici un autre visage de Gauguin : celui de l'auteur du Christ jaune, de l'Idole à la perle ou du Grand Bouddha, un mystique sans Credo, pourfendeur de tous les dogmes et de tous les cultes, mais attentif aux aspirations de l'âme et fasciné par l'"immense mystère" du divin. Marqué par son éducation chrétienne au petit séminaire de La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin, près d'Orléans, il a par la suite confronté la religion de son enfance à diverses formes de pensée et de spiritualité, au fil de ses lectures et de ses rencontres, de la Bretagne à la Polynésie. Sans jamais renier l'Evangile, dont il a toutefois rageusement dénoncé l'interprétation littérale qu'en fait à ses yeux l'Eglise catholique, il a peu à peu évolué vers une "religion du Tout", un syncrétisme conforme à l'esprit de la théosophie, mais en demeurant jaloux de son indépendance par rapport aux courants ésotériques de son époque. Indissociable de l'écriture qui fut loin de n'être pour lui qu'un passe-temps, la création artistique a évidemment été pour Gauguin le moyen d'expression privilégié d'un questionnement métaphysique et d'une quête spirituelle permanente, particulièrement celle du paradis perdu - celui de la Bible, de Rousseau ou de l'androgyne primordial - dont une Polynésie plus rêvée que réelle lui a permis d'inventer les figures et le décor. Le présent ouvrage se propose d'envisager les étapes d'une itinérance intérieure singulière. Outre une analyse des oeuvres artistiques et des textes du peintre-écrivain illustrant sa démarche, on trouvera une présentation des livres majeurs qui ont directement ou indirectement nourri sa réflexion. About the Author Docteur en littérature comparée, Christian Jamet s'est également orienté vers l'histoire de l'art. Auteur d'une Introduction à la peinture et d'une Célébration de l'offrande coécrite avec Michel Tournier, il a par ailleurs consacré plusieurs monographies à des artistes divers parmi lesquels Sandro Botticelli (Le Sacré et le Profane) ou Eugène Delacroix (Images de l'Orient). Son ouvrage Gauguin à Orléans, lui a valu un "Laurier vert", prix littéraire qui lui a été remis par Gonzague Saint Bris lors de la Forêt des Livres, en 2013.
