Raymond Depardon découvre le Chili en septembre 1971, accompagné du journaliste Robert Pledge, alors que le pays fête le premier anniversaire de l'élection de Salvador Allende. Cofondateur du parti socialiste et soutenu par une coalition d'Unité populaire, le président chilien souhaitait mettre en place " la voie chilienne vers le socialisme " avec, notamment, la nationalisation de secteurs majeurs de l'économie et les réformes agraires. Depardon photographie alors dans les rues de la capitale, à Santiago, les manifestations festives en soutien au gouvernement d'Allende. Il va également se rendre dans les terres du sud à la rencontre du peuple Mapuche qui se bat pour le droit de vivre sur la terre de ses ancêtres. Deux ans plus tard, Raymond Depardon et Robert Pledge envoient le photographe américain David Burnett au Chili pour couvrir le coup d'état d'Augusto Pinochet qui fait basculer le pays dans une dictature militaire. Les images de Burnett, qui viennent compléter et enrichir le reportage de Depardon, seront récompensées en 1973 par la Robert Capa Gold Medal Award. Publiée à l'occasion des 50 ans du coup d'état qui provoquera également la mort du président Salvador Allende, cette publication propose de revenir sur les événements entourant cet autre 11 septembre, celui de 1973, où les foules joyeuses photographiées par Depardon sont remplacées, sous l'objectif de Burnett, par des images de la répression sanglante qui leur a succédé. L'ouvrage est composé de deux parties, l'une consacrée aux photographies de Depardon, l'autre à celles de Burnett avec, pour séparation entre ces deux, la reproduction du cliché iconique du photographe chilien, Leopoldo Vargas, saisissant la dernière image de Salvador Allende vivant, sortant de son palais à la Moneda, l'arme à la main. Ces photographies sont enrichies par des textes d'auteurs chiliens qui font entrer en résonnance le Chili des années 1970 avec le Chili actuel, donnant à voir les enjeux de ce pays, 50 ans après le coup d'état.
