Description

Le travail réalisé par Gérard Garouste pour Don Quichotte est colossal. Plusieurs années ont été nécessaires à l’artiste pour penser, préparer et peindre les 150 gouaches qui illustrent l’édition de Diane de Selliers. La principale exigence était de réaliser au moins une oeuvre par chapitre, soit 125 tableaux pour deux volumes. Plusieurs diptyques et triptyques ont ensuite été ajoutés au fur et à mesure de la création. L’ensemble devait impérativement respecter le format de la collection « Les plus grands textes illustrés par les plus grands peintres », soit 24,5 x 33 cm. Une contrainte nécessaire pour préserver la caractère et l’authenticité des oeuvres lors de leur reproduction. Les gouaches réalisées par Gérard Garouste révèlent des couleurs éclatantes, d’une incroyable intensité. Le marron domine la plupart des oeuvres ; utilisé en fond, il crée un effet de luminosité par la superposition des couleurs. Ainsi, même le blanc devient un blanc très dense. Ces peintures mettent en valeur le roman et toute sa complexité, elles sont riches de symboles et d’humour et laissent entrevoir toute la profondeur du récit. Considéré comme un marrane, c’est-à-dire un juif converti, Cervantès ne pouvait pas laisser libre court à ses convictions à l’époque de l’Inquisition. Gérard Garouste est allé les chercher au coeur du roman. Il propose ainsi une oeuvre aux sens multiples, avec différents niveaux de lecture du texte. Gérard Garouste a par ailleurs lui-même choisit les exergues qui ponctuent le texte car ces passages l’ont interpellé et inspiré. Diane de Selliers lui a également demandé de réaliser des lettres ornées en ouverture de chaque chapitre pour accompagner l’ensemble iconographique. 126 lettrines en lien avec les illustrations ont donc été créées pour ce livre. Gérard Garouste les travaillait directement en marge de ses oeuvres.
