L'Empire hittite, grande puissance rivale de l'Egypte antique, domina l'Anatolie et étendit son influence sur le Levant jusqu'aux alentours de 1200 avant J.-C. Sa capitale, Hattusa, fut alors abandonnée cependant que prenait fin son emprise politique. Sa chute se traduisit par l'émergence de petites principautés, les royaumes néo-hittites et araméens, dans les territoires de la Turquie et de la Syrie modernes. Certains de ces royaumes étaient dirigés par les descendants des anciens gouverneurs hittites devenus rois, tandis que d'autres étaient fondés par des chefs de tribus araméennes anciennement nomades, décidés à régner depuis une capitale dont les monuments exalteraient leur pouvoir et leur ferveur à l'égard des dieux. Ces principautés, héritières des traditions politiques, culturelles et artistiques de l'empire disparu, s'épanouirent pendant deux siècles avant d'être conquises une à une par un nouvel empire, celui des Assyriens, qui domina l'ensemble du Proche-Orient jusqu'à la fin du VIIe siècle avant J.-C. Trois cents oeuvres réunies pour la première fois en France font revivre dans cet ouvrage les décors majestueux de ces royaumes oubliés : Karkemish, Sam'al, Masuwari, Palastin, Hamath, Gurgum, Malizi ou encore le Bit-Bahiani. De tous ces royaumes, le Bit-Banian est celui qui a livré les vestiges les plus impressionnants, découverts au début du XXe siècle à Tell Halaf, le site de son ancienne capitale Guzana, par le baron Max von Oppenheim, qui les rapporta à Berlin. Exposés dans un musée créé pour l'occasion, le Tell Halaf Museum, ils furent victimes des bombardements de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, mais, minutieusement restaurés, ils sont aujourd'hui le fleuron du Pergamonmuseum. Malgré la conquête assyrienne, l'héritage de ces petits Etats ne disparut pas totalement et exerça son influence sur le conquérant, autant par ses décors monumentaux que par la pratique continue de la langue araméenne, appelée à devenir la langue la plus parlée au Proche-Orient pendant l'Antiquité.
