De renommée mondiale, Wifredo Lam compte parmi les plus grands créateurs du XXe siècle, aux côtés de Picasso et de Max Ernst qui furent ses amis. Si, depuis trente ans, d'innombrables recherches ont approfondi les différentes facettes de sa peinture, il restait à les rapprocher et les confronter. Ainsi Jacques Leenhardt explore-t-il toutes les subtilités à travers une nouvelle approche globale. Sa vision est inédite. L'auteur retrace le parcours du peintre cubain aux origines multiples et les drames de son époque. Il décrit un artiste itinérant, ouvert et curieux de tout, anticonformiste et contestataire, tourmenté et confiant. Il évoque l'homme des rencontres et l'ami des poètes - parmi lesquels Césaire, Breton, Char... - de même que son engagement politique contre le fascisme, le racisme et toutes les dictatures. Jacques Leenhardt définit la singularité de cet artiste inclassable, qui a su à la fois retourner aux origines pour mieux s'en détacher. Réconcilier primitivisme et modernité. Parti très jeune de son île pour étudier les maîtres du passé - Bosch et Goya furent ses modèles, tout comme Chardin ou Matisse -, Lam a su puiser dans les avant-gardes, du surréalisme à CoBrA, qui furent pour lui des écoles de liberté. Son parcours est une invitation à penser et à sentir. Son vœu ? Faire naître un langage transculturel, donner un espace artistique à tous. Cette rencontre des cultures n'est-elle pas le point d'orgue de notre XXIe siècle ? L'œuvre de Lam, d'une étonnante actualité, a bien une valeur universelle.
