L'évolution de la chirurgie de la main en urgence depuis un quart de siècle est considérable. Les pathologies lourdes liées à des accidents du travail et qui impliquaient souvent des amputations totales se font plus rares. Les évolutions techniques et instrumentales, la réparation microchirurgicale des éléments vasculo-nerveux, ainsi que l'apparition de systèmes d'ancrage des ligaments et tendons ont orienté la pratique vers des interventions de haute technicité en milieu spécialisé. Ce traité a pour objectif d'établir une synthèse actuelle des connaissances de la chirurgie de la main en urgence, des principes aux techniques opératoires. Les premiers chapitres sont consacrés à des données de base : anesthésie, microcirculation et microchirurgie, instrumentation, bilan lésionnel et stratégie. Puis sont envisagés les lésions et leurs traitements : entorses, fractures, revascularisation, perte de substance et lambeaux, amputations, ongle traumatique, plaies des nerfs. Cette 4e édition a été entièrement actualisée, notamment une partie des 1000 clichés et dessins chirurgicaux.
