La maçonnerie ancienne inclut toutes les constructions en pierre et matériaux assimilés (pisé, brique, adobe...) datant d'avant le XXe siècle ; toute intervention nécessite des techniques appropriées, dans le respect des règles en vigueur. Après une synthèse portant sur près de vingt siècles de construction ancienne, l'ouvrage présente l'ensemble des matériaux et techniques, puis expose pas à pas les méthodes de calcul et de dimensionnement propres aux édifices anciens. Il s'attache à décrire précisément la phase de diagnostic (approche structurelle, pathologies, etc.) intervenant notamment dans un contexte patrimonial particulièrement délicat (bâtiments classés et ouvrages d'art, édifices religieux, constructions menaçant ruine...). Illustré par quelque 500 schémas, coupes, plans et photographies, ce livre est émaillé d'études de cas réels. Les pathologies font l'objet d'une attention particulière, dont un hors-texte en couleur permettant de les identifier précisément. Didactique, l'ouvrage fait la part belle aux définitions, synthèses, points sur la réglementation et références documentaires. Un glossaire recense tous les termes et expressions incontournables signalés dans le corps des chapitres. Cet ouvrage exhaustif est appelé à devenir une référence pour les ingénieurs et techniciens des bureaux d'études spécialisés, les architectes oeuvrant dans le domaine du patrimoine, les agents des collectivités territoriales et des établissements publics, mais aussi pour les entrepreneurs et les économistes de la construction.
