Cet ouvrage consacré à la grotte du Cavillon présente le bilan des recherches effectuées depuis plus de deux cent trente années sur ce site préhistorique exceptionnel situé au pied de la falaise des Baousse Rousse, à Grimaldi (Vintimille), notamment par Emile Rivière entre 1870 et 1875 et par le Prince Albert 1er de Monaco de 1895 à 1901. La première partie est consacrée à l'étude de la stratigraphie, des faunes quaternaires et des industries lithiques des niveaux du Moustérien et du Paléolithique supérieur. La faune des niveaux moustériens, très abondante a livré des restes d'ours des cavernes, de panthères, de lynx, de hyènes, de mammouths, de rhinocéros, de chevaux, de sangliers, d'aurochs et de cerfs, associés à une riche industrie lithique correspondant à un Moustérien de débitage levallois, riche en racloirs, caractérisé par la présence de pointes moustériennes, de racloirs allongés et d'assez nombreuses lames. Les niveaux du Paléolithique supérieur ont livré des industries aurignaciennes, gravettiennes et épigravettiennes. La deuxième partie est consacrée à l'étude de la sépulture de la "Dame du Cavillon", anciennement nommée "l'Homme de Menton", qui a été inhumée à l'âge de 37 ans dans cette caverne, au Gravettien moyen, il y a environ 24 000 ans. Pour son voyage dans l'au-delà, elle était parée d'une coiffe funéraire ornée de petites coquilles marines et de canines de cerf et d'un jambelet au-dessus de son mollet gauche. Un poinçon en os, taillé dans un métapode de cheval disposé près de sa tête, une pendeloque aménagée elle aussi dans un métapode de cheval et deux chevaux gravés sur les parois de la caverne au-dessus de la sépulture, témoignent d'un rite funéraire complexe en relation avec les plus profondes interrogations de l'esprit humain, parallèlement aux sanctuaires souterrains ornés des cultures du Paléolithique supérieur. La troisième partie est consacrée à l'étude anatomique du squelette de la "Dame du Cavillon", de type Cro-Magnon, qui appartenait à la culture du Gravettien moyen. Elle permet de la rapprocher des autres sépultures mises au jour dans les grottes des Baousse Rousse (Barma Grande, Barma du Baousso da Torre, Grotte des Enfants), dans la grotte des Arene Candide à Finale Ligure, et sur les sites de plein air de Predmost, Pavlov et Brno en Europe centrale. La "Dame du Cavillon", de type Cro-Magnon, appartenait à un groupe euro-méditerranéen, au crâne gracile et étroit, qui peut être distingué de celui connu dans le sud-ouest de la France (Cro-Magnon) plus robuste et large. Dans la quatrième partie sont réunies les références bibliographiques, outre celles concernant la grotte du Cavillon, toutes celles consacrées à l'ensemble des grottes des Baousse Rousse qui comprennent 810 titres.
