Ce traité est le premier ouvrage de médecine hospitalière en langue française. Ce n'est pas un livre sur l'hôpital, ce n'est pas un traité de médecine, mais un ouvrage consacré à la médecine telle qu'elle se pratique en milieu hospitalier, avec toutes ses spécificités, depuis la typoloqie des patients, dont les problèmes de santé sont surtout plus graves ou plus difficiles à résoudre qu'en médecine de ville, depuis les équipements disponibles jusqu'à la multidisciplinnrité qui la caractérise. Dans la première partie, est présenté le système hospitalier français, avec sa diversité et ses règles de fonctionnement. Dans une deuxième partie, sont abordés des thèmes transversaux, communs à tous les services de l'hôpital : les personnes âgées à l'hôpital, les soins palliatifs, les femmes enceintes, la gestion des risques, la recherche clinique à l'hôpital, etc. Les autres sections sont consacrées aux différentes disciplines de la médecine hospitalière : cardiologie, hématologie, pneumologie, réanimation, etc.
