Ce qui nous est parvenu se révèlecependant bien plus complexe que ne le laisse apparaître la dernière version du texte.La présente édition historique et critique rend pour la première fois accessibles lescinq versions achevées ainsi que les nombreux autres manuscrits dans leur contexteglobal. Dans la partie commentaire, sa genèse est présentée en détail ; des explicationssont données sur les supports de texte et les sources de Benjamin, la correspondanceen lien avec l’essai ainsi que d’autres documents précisent le contexte de l’époque. Le concept de reproductibilité technique désigne à la fois la reproduction par lamachine d’une réalité extérieure et la possibilité de multiplier cette reproduction.C’est au second aspect que s’attache Benjamin. La reproduction spécifique du film(comme de la photographie et du disque), consiste précisément dans le fait qu’il nes’agit pas d’une simple re-production, mais de la production de la reproductibilité parun appareillage. Cette reproductibilité commence avec les premiers moules et lafrappe de pièces de monnaie qui étaient à l’origine de petites oeuvres d’art picturales àl’effigie de souverains ou de dieux, et, avec la photographie et la reproductibilité del’audiovisuel, connaît un important bouleversement. Le deuxième aspect réside dans le fait que la reproductibilité de l’audiovisuel par la technique du film rend sans objet l’opposition entre original et reproduction. Avec saFontaine, Marcel Duchamp avait montré avec ironie comment un objet utilitaire produit en masse par l’industrie, un urinoir reproduit à des milliers d’exemplaires,pouvait se métamorphoser en oeuvre d’art originale. Avec le film s’érige un nouveau «standard » de production artistique qui est tout simplement déterminant pour lasituation de l’art, un standard duquel l’oeuvre d’art originale a disparu.
