A la fin du dix-huitieme siecle, Louis-Sebastien Mercier ecrivait: Je ressens une veritable joie en voyant la poesie dramatique, le plus seduisant et le plus ingenieux des arts d'imitation, universellement repandu, universellement estime. C'est le plus precieux heritage que nous aient transmis les anciens. [...] on peut appeler le theatre le chef-d'oeuvre de la societe . Un siecle plus tard, Barbey d'Aurevilly declare: Selon moi, c'est un art fini [...] qui a depasse son zenith et qui descend l'autre cote de la courbe qu'il a montee . Des premieres pages du recueil aux ultimes feuilletons, Barbey, nouveau Cassandre du theatre, n'en finit pas de sonner a grandes volees l'agonie de l'art dramatique. Revenant d'un bout a l'autre du recueil avec l'obstination d'une sombre antienne, la petite musique aurevillienne de la decadence dramatique forme le veritable fil des cinq volumes du Theatre contemporain: chaque nouveau feuilleton retentit comme un nouveau coup de glas et vient enfoncer un clou supplementaire dans le cercueil d'un art dramatique mal en point. Pourtant, Barbey n'en devient jamais ni doctrinaire, ni puritain, ni moraliste quand il en vient aux plaisirs du theatre et de la danse. Son jugement critique demeure sensible a la beaute des jeunes danseuses et comediennes qui ont l'oeil peu farouche et la jambe dictatrice ; il ne demande qu'a rire a la facon de Moliere. Ce qui manque decidement a ce theatre contemporain, c'est de quoi susciter l'emotion: de l'audace, de l'invention, de la verve. Or pour exalter cela, Barbey s'avere etre un maitre inflexible, un juge eclatant et un temoin tapageur.
