Des textes myceniens jusqu'aux traites d'Aristote, quelque quatre cents termes ont ainsi enrichi tous les champs du lexique, aussi bien poetique que technique et scientifique, ou encore moral, politique, economique et religieux; tandis que certains se sont durablement etablis dans la langue grecque, d'autres, simples hapax crees a des fins poetiques ou comiques, ont pu etre imites par les poetes de l'epoque hellenistique et romaine, ou dans la litterature chretienne et byzantine. A travers l'histoire de chaque terme se croisent ainsi les hasards de l'usage, qui peut tout autant conduire a une specialisation semantique qu'a une demotivation, et les necessites de la structuration du lexique, qui entrainent des remotivations au sein d'un meme microsysteme. Ainsi est illustree, dans un esprit a la fois philologique et linguistique, l'originalite d'un procede aux frontieres entre morphologie, syntaxe et lexique, qui a donne naissance a nombre de termes, comme encephale, epiderme, epiglotte, hypocondres, ou epitaphe, ephemere, analogue, paradoxe, encore vivants dans la langue d'aujourd'hui.
