Dans L'Ecole d'Athenes, Raphael represente Platon tenant a la main, Timee. De fait, ce texte est, depuis l'Antiquite, considere comme le plus important des dialogues platoniciens. Avec Critias, Timee formait une trilogie, dont malheureusement seule une partie nous est parvenue: le Critias est inacheve et Hermocrate, la troisieme partie, est entierement perdu. Ecrits a la fin de la vie du philosophe, ces deux textes, sont en bien des points l'aboutissement de la pensee platonicienne. La cosmogonie, c'est-a-dire la naissance de l'univers, la theorie de l'ame du monde, celle des elements, sont autant de sujets abordes par Socrate, Timee, Critias et Hermocrate, et definissent une science platonicienne. Apres les origines du monde, viennent celles de l'homme: debute alors le fameux mythe de l'Atlandide, cite rivale d'Athenes dont elle est l'antithese. Inacheve, le texte se termine par la decadence des rois atlantes et l'on ne sait quel chatiment Zeus decida de leur infliger. Notre edition rassemble en un volume les deux dialogues. Une longue notice introductive precede chacun des deux textes et en eclaire les difficultes, tant theoriques qu'historiques, particulierement pour le Timee. Les personnages des dialogues, tous reels, sont brievement analyses, de meme que les sources du philosophe et les echos dans l'oeuvre de Platon. Une large part de la notice est reservee au mythe de l'Atlandide, tandis que l'histoire de la tradition manuscrite est relatee en detail.
