Description

Si Aristophane est de loin le premier des auteurs de comedies grecs, il est encore fort mal connu: les informations relatives a sa biographie sont rares et souvent douteuses. Ni la date de sa naissance ni celle de sa mort ne sont etablies avec certitude: tout au plus peut-on affirmer qu'Aristophane etait athenien et qu'il vecut entre 450 et 375 avant J.C. Ses uvres cependant revelent, a defaut de sa vie, ses opinions et surtout son audace: Les Acharnien osent, en pleine guerre du Peloponnese, un plaidoyer pour la paix, Les Cavaliers s'insurgent contre la politique de Cleon, et Les Nuees sont un requisitoire contre l'enseignement sophistique. Le dramaturge use de son puissant talent comique pour defendre ses idees: outre un auteur exceptionnellement drole, Aristophane est aussi un ancetre de l'ecrivain engage. Des quarante-quatre pieces composees, selon la tradition, par Aristophane, seules onze nous sont parvenues. Notre edition rassemble en un volume les trois premieres, Les Acharniens, Les Cavaliers et Les Nuees. Une introduction generale fait le point de nos connaissances sur l'auteur et relate de maniere detaillee l'histoire, riche et complexe, de la tradition manuscrite. Chaque piece est precedee d'une notice qui lui est propre: le lecteur y trouvera tous les renseignements necessaires a la bonne intelligence d'un texte riche en allusions historiques et politiques. Les passages les plus fameux, tels celui sur le Raisonnement fort et le Raisonnement faible ou le portrait de Socrate font l'objet de lectures plus approfondies. L'ouvrage est en outre enrichi de notes eclairant la lecture.
