Certes, on a beaucoup écrit, filmé, témoigné sur cette O.A.S. fondée en février 1961 à Madrid par Pierre Lagaillarde et Jean-Jacques Susini. On a beaucoup brodé, accusé, rêvé, sans trop savoir. On ne peut, en effet, raconter l'O.A.S. qu'en l'ayant côtoyée ou combattue. En pleine guerre d'Algérie, sans former un bloc uniforme, des nostalgiques de Vichy, fascistes, monarchistes et poujadistes de toutes origines s'allient à des déserteurs pour abattre le général de Gaulle et la République. Leurs ambitions sont contradictoires ; leurs soutiens mal affirmés, changeants, insaisissables. Au-delà des desperados d'Alger et d'Oran, combien sont-ils réellement, ces combattants de l'O.A.S. ? Cinq cents ? Deux mille ? Beaucoup plus ? Et leurs sympathisants ? Pendant plus de trente ans, j'ai recueilli des centaines de témoignages. J'ai écouté. Consulté. Vérifié. Comparé. Et voici, enfin, l'histoire secrète de l'O.A.S., qui est mon livre, comme on dit. Moi aussi, j'ai été "Algérie française". J'ai aimé l'Algérie à en mourir, mais ce livre n'est pas un pèlerinage. Ni un témoignage. Car si j'étais du fer dont s'est forgée l'O.A.S., je n'ai jamais participé au combat des Pieds-noirs désespérés. Raconter l'O.A.S., c'est revenir une fois encore en Algérie, comme historien cette fois. Avec distance. Sans langue de bois. Sans parti pris. " G.F.
